Frequently asked questions
Leather mute for Violin, Viola & Cello
U.S. Patent No. 7,906,716
Q.: Which way does the name engraving face?
A.: The name engraving faces the player. When engaged in position II (meno sordino/mezzo soprano) our trademark violin logo faces the bridge.
Q.: Do the angled notches line up and engage with the strings?
A.: As illustrated on the diagram on the back of your package insert:
The two small notches on the underside of the mute do not touch the strings in position I (con sordino/pianissimo) when the mute is placed on top of the bridge.
The notches do engage with the strings in position II (meno sordino/mezzo piano/pinched against the bridge) and in position III (senza sordino/without muting/pushed towards the tail piece).
Q.: Will the mutes fit fractional size instruments or 5 string instruments?
A.: No, the mutes are designed for full-size 4 string instruments only.
However, fractional size customization is possible by a trained violin maker who can cut down the width of your mute. Mutes that have been customized in that way are not eligible for refunds.
